Location/Membership: Barnsley U3A, of which I am a member, is in the Yorkshire and Humberside region which is home to 50 U3As. We have 840 members and the number is rising.
Activities: We have groups for Cosmology, Philosophy, French, Spanish and Classical Studies (including Latin). There are musical groups too covering group, Ukulele, a Big Choir and also one called 'Folketry', sometimes called a 'singaround', which is a mixture of folk and poetry.
Five walking groups, ranging from short distances, to serious walking. A Movement to Music group, Ten Pin Bowling, or Tai Chi; darts and snooker, three painting groups, plus drawing; poetry, book and writing get-togethers. We're a social bunch too; our bi-monthly curry and Italian nights have proven popular not just among foodies, but for those who love a good laugh among delicious food.
Comment: Since I joined U3A, I have been able to do many of the things. I have learned to paint, I sing in our choir (above) - and you can find the Barnsley U3A choir on Youtube. I am learning to play the guitar, my wife and I sing in the folk music section of the U3A, my wife also reads poetry and I am learning about all aspects of writing.
Some of the skills I have been able to pass on to other members of our U3A branch, is my lifelong passion for nature. I have been able to present a Power Point about a nature reserve I was once involved in and I am writing a book.
