Ambleside and District U3A

From Mike Green, Chair, Ambleside & District U3A

Location: Situated in the heart of the Lake District, we have about 330 members mostly living in Ambleside and Windermere and the surrounding communities, including Bowness-on-Windermere, Grasmere and Staveley.

Membership and activity groups: 2015 is our 20th anniversary and we are busy planning our celebrations and to write a history of our group.

We hold a monthly General Meeting with an external speaker covering a broad range of topics, followed by the opportunity for social interaction over tea and biscuits.

We have over twenty interest groups that give members opportunities to partake of physical, intellectual and social activities. Our groups include Bridge, Crosswords, Mah-jong, Discussion, Family History, Local History, Natural History, Gardens, Photography, Science, Reading, Play Reading, French and Spanish Conversation, Holidays, Pub Lunches, Climbing and Table Tennis.

Our four walking groups cover the range from all day outings on the high fells, (see one group on Steel Fell above Grasmere in the picture above) which may include scrambling, to gentler strolls of 4 – 5 miles.

Comment: I have been a member of the U3a since retiring in 2009 and particularly appreciate the opportunity to keep body and mind active along with like-minded friends. As chair of the group since September 2013 my current aim is to increase both our range of activities and our membership numbers.
